Karkadeh (hibiscus)
Deep-crimson hibiscus steeped cold and sweet — Sudan grows some of the world's finest.

History and culture
A major Sudanese export crop and the colour of every welcome and Ramadan sunset; the eastern states grow the prized dark calyces.
Ingredients
- 1 cup dried hibiscus
- 1.5 L water
- Sugar to taste
- Optional: cloves, mint
How it is made
- Rinse the hibiscus; steep in cold water 4–8 hours.
- Strain deeply; sweeten while warm.
- Chill and serve over ice.
