Why Sudan holds more royal pyramids than anywhere on earth
Along the Nile's east bank, the kings and queens of Kush kept building royal pyramids for a thousand years after everyone else had stopped.
The royal cemeteries of the Kingdom of Kush — at Meroë, el-Kurru, Nuri and Jebel Barkal — hold the remains of well over two hundred royal pyramids, more than survive in the rest of the world combined. They are steeper and more slender than their northern cousins, built of sandstone blocks over the tombs of kings, queens and crown princes from roughly the 8th century BC to the 4th century AD.
Meroë itself became the royal capital around 590 BC and flourished on iron-smelting, gold and the caravan trade. Its ruling line included the kandakes — sovereign queens like Amanirenas and Amanitore — whose pyramids stand beside the kings' with equal honour. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2011 as the "Island of Meroe."
What astonishes visitors most is not the count. It is the solitude: on an ordinary morning the dunes between the chapels are empty, and the only sound is wind on sand.
